Our association — what we stand for

Our Mission & Vision

Built by families, for families.

Every Bangladeshi family in Oklahoma should have somewhere to turn — for a festival, for paperwork, or for a hand in a hard month.

The Deshi Youth Association is a vibrant, Oklahoma-based community dedicated to uniting and empowering Bangladeshi people, preserving our rich cultural heritage while fostering leadership and connection in our new home. Below, you will find the details of the dedicated individuals currently serving in leadership roles.

  • 01

    Keep the culture in reach

Pohela Boishakh, Victory Day, Eid gatherings and the annual picnic — organised so the next generation grows up inside them, not reading about them.

  • 02

    Make the paperwork navigable

Passports, NID, attestations, no-visa-required seals. We keep the current embassy and consulate links in one place so nobody chases a dead page.

  • 03

    Stand behind our neighbours

Bereavement support, newcomer orientation, and emergency assistance funded by member contributions and reviewed by the board.

  • 04

    Show the books

Contributions in, expenses out. Members sign in and read the same ledger the board reads — no summary, no rounding.

In practice — how it works

What that looks like day to day.

Four pillars are easy to write down. These are the arrangements underneath them.

01

What we do, week to week

The calendar is the association's backbone. Pohela Boishakh in April, Eid gatherings, Victory Day in December, the annual summer picnic — and the smaller Saturdays in between, where a few dozen families turn up with food and the children end up running the place.

None of it is a performance staged for an audience. The point is that a child growing up in Oklahoma has somewhere to be Bangladeshi without it being an occasion.

02

How the association is run

A board of directors, with named officers holding named portfolios. The current roster is published in full, role by role, on the About Us page — not a list of first names, but who is answerable for what.

Decisions that spend money go to the board. Decisions that change how the association works go to the membership. Neither happens in a group chat.

03

Where the money goes

Member contributions pay for the events, the community fund, and the help we give families in a hard month — bereavement support, newcomer orientation, emergency assistance.

Every contribution in and every expense out is recorded. Members sign in to the member panel and read the same ledger the treasurer reads: individual lines, not a summary, and no rounding at the end of the year.

04

Who can join

Any Bangladeshi family in Oklahoma, and anyone who wants to stand alongside one. There is no interview and no quota — write to us, come to a Saturday, and decide whether it is for you before anything is asked of you.

Membership is what funds the association, so we would rather you joined after you have been in the room than before.

05

What we are building toward

A second generation that can answer "where are you from?" without reaching for a parent. That means Bangla spoken at home and heard in public, 1952 and 1971 known as history rather than rumour, and the food, music and writing treated as living things rather than heirlooms.

Know Bangladesh is where we have started writing that down.
